theplacetobe.net is using a Google Search Appliance to offer two applications:
It is estimated that there may be as many as 500 sites published in and about Brighton & Hove and the search engine has been designed to cater for as many as these sites possible. The search engine digs deep into local content and will become more intelligent as it evolves.
Better search facilities on partner sites make them easier to use, wherever visitors arrive from. Search has been added to most partner sites, including the Primary Care Trust, Wired Sussex, the City Council and SCIP. Work continues on building search facilities for the other partners.
The next stage is to build links between search results on different sites, so that query on the Council's site for information about health-related services, for example, can offer results from the Primary Care Trust. This means that local information systems can be driven by the user's needs, rather than knowing who runs which service. SCIP is already using this facility to enable it's site visitors to search it's site and community.brighton.co.uk - see an example of the results here:
The network of content currently includes all the partner's sites plus a growing network of local sites. This is being added in an organic way, in response to the needs of users and requests from lcoal site owners who want to be in the search engine.
There will be no charge for being in the search engine but the partners are developing policies about the quality of information held in the search engine, as well rules about what is appropriate, such as not including adult content.
